The story behind this image:

I captured this image on Christmas Eve before leaving town to go visit my family for the holidays. I couldn’t resist a drive past the river en route just in case I might get lucky. I had spent a couple of weeks camped out by that stage with not even a sighting so I guess Santa took pity on me this day and gave me my present early.

There is a pair of kingfishers who frequent the stretch of river where I go to capture my images. This is the female - you can tell by the orange colour of her lower beak. I’ve named the male kingfisher Elvis (King of the river) so it’s only natural that I should refer to his ‘wife’ as Priscilla.

In this photo, Priscilla is coming in to land on a twig. In the original capture the twig is upright and she’s flying in almost upside down to land. I have rotated the image for a better composition.

For each successful flight shot there are probably 300 in the bin.
