The story behind this image:

I love the river Dodder.

Not only because sitting on its banks waiting for something to happen is a wonderful way to spend a few hours but mainly because it’s such a dark river which allows me to capture images in what has become my signature style.

The heron is a regular visitor to the stretch of river where I sit patiently waiting for the kingfisher. It’s a challenge to capture his wingspan in an aesthetically pleasing composition. Usually his wings are at very rigid angles, or his head is hidden or the flick of the feathers isn’t going the way I’d like to have a good balance to the composition.

One of my favourite views of the heron is when he’s gliding up river away from me. I try to capture the precise moment when his wings are shaped like this as i am very drawn to symmetrical compositions. They remind me how everything in nature is in balance.
