The story behind this image:

The light was dropping fast and I was about to call it a day, after an entire day sitting waiting with not even a fly past.

Suddenly I heard it - that unmistakable high pitched chirp that always sets my heart racing. I spied him coming from up river. I didn’t really have time to set up because I know from experience there is no time. So I just aimed in his general direction as I have done so many times before and hoped for the best. I’m never optimistic though because usually he’s not even in the frame or if he is it’s a corner of his tail or a blue blob.

But on this occasion I got lucky and managed to capture a sequence as he darted past. It was all over in about 2 seconds. I reviewed the images on the spot and let out a squeal of delight which must have shocked the passers by. This was the first time I had managed a successful capture on this new river I had started to frequent.

I composited the three stages of flight to showcase the majesty of this amazing little bird so vibrant and so perfect, a beacon of light and joy in an otherwise dark murky environment.

For each successful flight shot there are probably 300 in the bin.

This image features in my personal project The Heart of the Mater which recounts in images my experience of critical illness and recovery.
