The story behind this image:
This was a very good day.
Conditions were perfect: lots of light so I could use a really fast shutter speed, calm conditions so the dark water was perfectly still - great for the kingfisher to fish and by extension great for me too. I just had to wait just as I had waited so many times before under equally perfect conditions (except no kingfisher).
I had borrowed the new Canon top of the range camera which I was considering buying for its ability to lock onto and track the eyes of birds and its super fast shutter speed (20 frames per second). I was also tempted by the high resolution allowing me to achieve really high quality images with superb detail if only the subject would show up!
So on this day the stars aligned - this is the second of a sequence of shots I captured as the kingfisher was bursting from the water with a fish. The first of this sequence is one of my three favourite shots I’ve ever taken of a kingfisher and I have taken literally thousands by now, if not TENS of thousands.
All three images feature in the series The Heart of the Mater which recounts in images my experience of critical illness and recovery.
I bought the camera.
